PAST PROGRAMS & KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Second Step - For more than twelve (12) years Pettengill staff taught this nationally acclaimed violence prevention program to hundreds of elementary aged children within Salisbury (Triton) and Amesbury School Districts.

This social skills curriculum addressed issues pertaining to empathy, emotional management, positive communication, problem solving and cooperation.

Pettengill trained staff also provided school staff professional development and consulting services, "train the trainer model".

Salisbury Annual Peace Ceremony and Awards Program - For over ten (10) years The Pettengill House Community Partnership and Salisbury Community partnered annually to provide annual peace making activities throughout the month of May which designated non-violence month in the state of Massachusetts.

Coordinated by Pettengill House, each year twelve (12) nominated students were celebrated at a formal community awards ceremony and received state citations and savings bonds donated from area banks.

This annual ceremony was attended by staff and students of Salisbury Elementary School, community members, parents, families, local and state officials and partnership members.

The Massachusetts Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning - was collaboration of the Triton Regional School District, The Pettengill House, the Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Merrimack Valley and Harlequyn Drama Company.  The Pettengill House component "Project Success" provided extensive social and life skills as well as community service, character developmental learning, recreation, art therapy and writing activities for at risk fifth (5th) and sixth (6th) grade students.

Project Success - This scientific based substance abuse prevention model program funded through the Department of Public Health included classroom curriculum taught by Pettengill House staff to all sixth (6th) grade students attending Salisbury Elementary School in Salisbury, MA.

Additional components of Project Success include family support programs, parenting classes, counseling, after school activities and community service.  This successful program has been replicated nationally and proven scientifically effective in reducing drug and alcohol use among middle school students.  Extensive Project Success data and evaluation was collected and overseen by Executive Director and Program Evaluator.  Project Success is currently a Department of Justice "Model Program".  The Pettengill House results were significantly higher than/equal to the original program model from Irvine, California.

Olweus Bullying Program - Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a national model program taught by trained Pettengill House staff to all Salisbury Elementary School third (3rd), fourth (4th), fifth (5th) and sixth (6th) graders (500 students in 2002 & 2003).  The program was evaluated by classroom teachers and proved effective in preventing bullying and other social and behavioral issues.

North Essex Prevention Coalition - Partnering with Community Action, Inc. within the Haverhill, Newburyport, Amesbury and Salisbury communities, Pettengill House provided prevention education programming to youth and families.  This three year program (1998, 1999 & 2000), addressed issues of substance and violence prevention.  Program included afterschool, weekend and summer programs, education training and recreational activities.  Youth and adult evaluation and data results indicated significant improvement in all areas.  This grant was funded by the Center of Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Pettengill Parenting Education and Support Program - provides free parenting education classes to parents and caretakers.  This thirty (30) week ongoing curriculum includes a pre and post survey and provides open enrollment to all participants.  The Pettengill House Parenting Program is approved by Massachusetts Department of Children and Family Services.
